What’s the first thing you think about when you see or hear the word “hostel”? If you’re like me, you think of that horrible movie made in 2005. Yeah, it scared the hell out of me for sure. However, after experiencing hostels a number of times, I can honestly say they are awesome.
I’ve stayed in some gross ones, but probably because I didn’t know any better and didn’t do my research. I’ve also stayed in a lot more that are nicer than a lot of hotels. Here are some must knows about hostels before you choose between a hotel and hostel.
#10 Know where to Look. I usually use hostelbookers.com over hostelworld.com because there are no additional booking fees, but both sites are pretty good. They also offer listings for hotels, bed and breakfasts, campsites, etc. Look at the overall rating, but I usually judge a place more on their level of cleanliness and security over location and amenities.
#9 You CAN stay in your own room. You pay by the bed, so you can pay a little more to have your own room or stay in a shared room. The shared rooms have bunk beds and usually have lockers for you to keep your valuables. Bring an extra lock in case because sometimes you have to pay to rent one. I would actually bring a few locks to lock up your bags and have one for your locker. Also, you can search for beds in a shared room by mixed/female/male. When traveling alone, I try my best to stay in my own room for peace of mind. I’ve stayed in a couple shared (and mixed) rooms before in Valencia, Spain and Athens, Greece and have been absolutely fine.
#8 If you want air conditioning, you need to look for a place that has it! Be cognizant that not every hostel will have free A/C or A/C at all.
#7 Pack accordingly. Even if you plan on staying in hostels with single rooms, pack as if you have to share a bathroom. What I mean is, bring your own toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, soap, etc.) and a plastic bag with handles to hold all of them. Don’t forget to pack a quick dry towel because sometimes hostels don’t offer towels. Most do though. And definitely don’t forget shower sandals. Check out my packing cheat sheet for more packing tips http://wp.me/p2pZmy-d
#6 Save money and cook your meals. Most hostels offer full service kitchens with all of the cookware, silverware, plates, etc. It’s nice to be able to stop by a local shop and make yourself a healthy meal while traveling. It’s also a cheaper alternative!
#5 Free wifi. Most hostels offer free wifi. Every single hostel I’ve every stayed in has offered free wifi. An interesting thing to note is hotels will usually make you pay for wifi.
#4 It’s secure. Every hostel I’ve experienced has either given you a key for the main door or has someone working in the lobby that will buzz you in. There are hostels that don’t do this, but you’ll be able to tell when you book online and see their security rating.
#3 You can book most tours through your hostel. If you want to go on a walking tour or snorkeling for the day, they can help you book something or give you the best tips on where to go.
#2 Luggage hold. If you have stayed or will be staying at the hostel, they are usually nice enough to let you lock up your luggage for the day while you travel or sightsee. Keep your valuables with you!
#1 Hostels are the best way to meet new people. You are definitely going to meet new people, and have more fun (IMO)! I’ve met a lot of amazing travelers in Europe and still stay in touch. You hear great stories and all the memories are even sweeter with a bunch of new friends.
The point I’m making is this: hostels shouldn’t be overlooked as an option while traveling. People that know me, know that I wear sandals in any hotel I stay in (even a Category 7 Hilton or the W Hotel). I wouldn’t steer you in the wrong direction is what I mean. This post isn’t geared solely to student or budget travelers. I’ve had the opportunity to stay in some really nice hotels overseas, but some of the best memories I have of traveling would not have been possible if I didn’t stay in a hostel- whether it be the places I was able to see or the people I was able to meet. Safe travels!
